Attending a hair event is always a learning and a warm environment. On October 15, 2010, we set sail on Carnival Imagination heading for the Bahamas. It was on Sunday morning that the hair learning took place. There were several conferences that focused on many aspects of life. Conferences what were presented were goal setting, using social networking media, hair and scalp issues and lock cap. The love, energy and knowledge were unspeakable. Our people radiated beyond the expectation of the norm. It was truly a blessing to have attended the Hairitage Cruise and I will be there next year. All types of natural hair styles were present, double strand twist, Sisterlocks, Traditional locks, bald-dies, Caesar cuts and cornrows. Originally, I felt that they were more people attending the cruise for the hair conference. There were so many black men and women with natural hair styles. Our blessing came in on that sunny Sunday morning.

“Hair” Today Gone Tomorrow

Once you were happy and NAPPY with a head full of CURLY KINKS, but you looked in the MIRROR, and gazed back in terror, thinking that this head of HAIR just stinks.

So not being pleased, you began to TOSS and to TEASE, those unruly LOCKS of hair; FRYING and DYEING, and eventually crying, as your beautiful CROWN disappeared.

What have I done to my beautiful BUN which once graced the top of my HEAD? I though I would look CUTE, but to tell you the truth, I winded up BALD instead.

Why couldn’t I accept mother’s ancient precept, that true BEAUTY comes from within, and spare myself the pain, of seeking to be vain, by acknowledging my locks with a grin.

All of that STYLING and PILING, and heating beating I suffered through for days, did not achieve that fabulous WEAVE, nor did it leave my hair in WAVES.

But I continued to cuss and to fuss, determined that I would MUSS up this WOOLY head of mine; no matter what it would take, I’d make this hair lay STRAIGHT, even if it took until the ends of time.

Now the CHEMICAL GEL burnt like hell, and the $80 PERM didn’t hold FIRM, but none of this mattered; because I savagely attacked, hair in front and back, until my brains became scattered.

But now I can’t seem to recall, how I first became bald, and I stand here staring in the mirror; gazing in dread, at the empty SPOT on my head, realizing for the first time my error.

So with tears in my eyes, I’ve come to realize, what a PRECIOUS gift I had been given; that my BEAUTIFUL black hair, was indeed beyond compare, a monument to all that is living.

So now every STRAND that I find, I treat TENDER and kind, learning to love myself as I am; no more HAiR ACHES for me, because I finally now see, that my locks are a precious GEM.

My hair locking experience has been truly amazing. After three and a half wonderful years, I can say that my hair only needs shampooing and styling. No conditioners, oil, gel, grease, wax, mineral oil or petroleum is used on my hair or scalp. These locks are a wash and go hair style for a liberated me! During my journey, it became evident that my hair is a representation of my health as a whole. My Sisterlocks® are soft and healthy. Water and cod liver oil have become my two better friends. Each morning I drink one teaspoon of cod liver oil and drink water all day long. Less time and attention is given to hair products and I’m more focused on my health. About one year ago, I met two doctors who are a married couple. The husband is a herbalist and makes hair mist, shampoo etc. By the way, his hair mist is the best that I have used thus far. It is excellent for itchy and flaky scalp. I use it mid week or whenever my scalp starts itching. Within minutes of spraying the mist on, my scalp is soothed and the itching stops immediately. The product has no harsh chemicals and smells great.

I installed big locks on a lady’s hair and shared the doctor’s telephone number with her for the purpose of product purchase. To my amazement, she called the doctor’s home and in her line of questions asked the doctor if she is willing to share her husband.

When the lady returned for her retightening, she told me what she had asked the doctor’s wife. I was lost for words and did not know how to respond. Never again will I ever share anyone’s telephone number with anybody. I was totally embarrassed because I told the woman that the couple are doctors. Where has professionalism gone to?

Lint and your locks!

Finding lint in your locks can be a common problem. Below is a list of things to pay attention to:

1. Be careful with everything that touches your hair; for example, scarves, car upholstery, bedding, towels and furniture fabric.
2. Cover your locks with a silky/satiny scarve at night or while doing household cleaning.
3. Do not allow anything with even a slightly fuzzy texture to touch your locks.
4. Use micro fiber towels (my preference is a black towel for your hair).
5. Check you locks daily while finger combing your hair.
6. Cover your locks when wearing wool coats.

Try the following if your locks already have lint:

1. If your locks are not mature, try brushing the lint out or use a fine tweezers to remove the lint.
2. A permanent marker can be use to cover up the lint.
3. Color your locks to cover up the lint.

Smaller locks are magnets

The more locks you have the better your hair looks. Smaller locks are like magnets. They draw people’s attention to you and some of those persons will follow you or tack you down. A typical example is last Saturday morning while I was in Walgreens. The cashier appeared very helpful and left his register to assist me in finding an item I wanted. Before leaving my presence, he started questioning me about my hair. He wanted to know if my Sisterlocks™ were twists and if his hair can be done like my hair. From my visual standing position, his hair was dense with a medium deep curl pattern. He can surely have the Brotherlocks™ that he deserves.

When I had 633 locks, my compliments can in from day one. With having 448 locks, my compliments started coming in at seven and a half months. The more locks you have the better your hair looks. People generally admire smaller locks. Smaller locks takes a longer time to retighten, require frequent retightenings and are more expensive to maintain. I will encourage you that if your preference is smaller locks, just go for them. Having a head of beautiful locks will always draw people to you where ever you go. Your locks will be the center of discussion at every dinner table. You will be able to walk with pride, knowing that your hair is looking and feeling good.

Six weeks ago, I had my hair retightened. Upon completion, I got up and looked at the back of the black, reclining chair. It was cover in flakes, dandruff or whatever was falling from my scalp. Immediately, I went into action to remedy this problem. I ate more green salads with first cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil. I drank one tea spoon of cod liver oil twice daily. My water intake was increased and I had a colonic. With these changes over six weeks, I am proud to say that my hair was retightened last night and there is an 80% scalp improvement. The black chair back was not covered in flakes and my scalp was not itchy. There has been a mark improvement in my scalp condition and for this I’m grateful. On March 6, 2010, I attended the book signing for the new book on Sisterlocks®. The crowd was warm and welcoming. It was my first visit to the Hue Man’s Book Store. This is a nice book store located in Harlem that is easily accessible. I learnt two valuable lessons while attending the book signing. Those lessons were that some people don’t respect free services and I cannot please everyone. While being a Trainee in April 2009, the following services were offered free:

1. Free Consultations including sample locks

2. Free Installations for a maximum of four inches of hair

3. Free Follow-ups

4. Free Starter Kits that included a bottle of Sisterlocks® Starter Shampoo

I made myself available and responded to every email, text or telephone call/message. For one individual, I provided free follow-ups whenever a single lock slipped. On Saturday at the book signing was my free pay back day. It was there in conversation that I learnt how much my free services were appreciated. Life is about learning and my quest for knowledge will end at the grave. How have I grown after this experience? Presently, I am a NYS Master Barber, NYS Natural Hair Stylist and a Certified Sisterlocks® Consultant. There is no longer a need to offer free services and I will continue to offer the best services. This experience has enforced my differential advantage for which I’m grateful!

Hair Locking Tips

Locking is about patience, so it is a long term commitment that might
last 2 years or more for the locking to be complete. Be 100% sure that
this is the step you want to take.

Your hair (no matter what texture) will frizz during the process.
Know that this is a normal process. All lockers will have to go
through this experience so relax and don't stress!

For people with looser curl textures or naturally straight hair,
accept that frizz might always be part of the locking process.

Love those bumps! It adds character to your locks.

It seems no two people with afro hair has the same texture, naturally
your locks will look different.

There might be times when you are feeling impatient, stressed, bored
and negative about your choice in locking, don't worry; this is very
normal especially during the teenage phases when locks have their own
mind. Take a deep breath and remember that this time will pass. Enjoy
the journey; don't waste time on stressing over it!

Be prepared to learn a few lessons on the way and throw out your old
perceptions of beauty.

Keep a lock journal to remind your Self how far you have come!

Collect headwear and experiment.

Your locks are unique and beautiful. No one else's locks will be the
same as yours so don't compare your locks, just love and accept what
you have.

Locking should not be an uncomfortable or unhygienic experience. Wash
your locks regularly and always keep them clean.

Water is your best friend throughout the locking stages.

Adding some jazz to your locks is always in fashion. I have been Sisterlocked for two years and enjoy using Soft Spikes curlers. The Power of Hairlocks (Sisterlocks®)

Hairlocks are great to see
On the vast sea of human heads
Hairlocks are technically plaited
In unique and tiny pigtails

I vowed to plait them someday
And the venture soon became
My passion
That I could braid someday

Having a balance in life is most important. Having a head full of beautiful and healthy locks will make you walk tall, proud and strong. As with everything else, there are times when our locks break. You can lose locks for the following reasons:

1. Stress
2. Medication
3. Hormonal changes
4. Coloring (alters the texture of our hair)
5. Improper hair accessories
6. Too tight headbands or ponytails
7. Allowing our locks to mat (not separating after washing)

There are nutrients and herbs that promote healthy hair. The following is a brief list of our review:

The Four Stages of Hair Locking

Baby Locks
The hair is thin, tightly coiled spirals. Its appearance is along the lines of either ringlets or Shirley Temple Curls. Or you might have chosen to just plait the hair in medium to small braids. This is the infancy stage (Baby Locks).

Teen Locks
During this phase a small bud (like a pea in a pod) begins to emerge about three quarters down the lock. The matted imprint begins at the bud and then expends like a bubble because it is beginning to loosely mat. It is an enlarged microcosm of a lock. At this stage the lock is no longer tight and thin. It is rebellious, has a mind of its own and is discovering its own way. It acts like a teenager in a sense.

Adult locks
After the budding phase, the entire lock begins the process of interlocking and matting. The direction is downward from the bud to the end of the hair and back upwards towards the scalp. The hair closest to the scalp is not locked; this is where you have new growth. During this phase, the hair increases intensity because it begins to replace itself like DNA. Your hair remains in this stage for the longest period of time (Adult Locks).

Elder Locks
This is the final stage in which the hair becomes mature adult locks; an airtight, interlocking spiraling network system. The Locks become consistently tight and fairly solid at this point. It will probably be fairly long in length and at this point, as the hair will grow extraordinarily once the spiral form has been established (Elder Locks).

Is Sisterlocks® Economical?

Grab your calculator and let us do the math. Sisterlocks® is an economical and a green hair style. I wore a tapered afro, perms, gerry curls and hot combed/pressed hair for years. The tapered afro was the most economical of all of my hair styles. With the buzz cut and tip, I spent approximately $24.00 monthly. In my mother’s opinion, I was in need of a new hair style. She was joined by my boyfriend who expressed the same feelings. It was with the encouragement of my Mom and boyfriend that I worked out the economics of Sisterlocks®.

At that point, I started going to a salon on Merrick Blvd to have my hair double strand twist. It cost $45.00 plus a tip bi-weekly. I was spending $100.00 monthly in the salon and by mid of the second week, my hair was becoming on kept at the back of my head. Not to mention that showering loosen the gel and soiled my shirt collar and pillow cases.

I was not happy with my transition from an afro to double strand twist. It was more expensive than the afro and was quite messy. A friend of mine had a head of beautiful Sisterlocks® and after researching it, Sisterlocks® was more economical than my frequent salon visits. The Sisterlocks® installation is expensive, but you save money with the retightening. I prefer a flat rate for retightening. After six months, you can take the retightening class and do your own hair. Better yet, if you have a friend or relative who has Sisterlocks® and has taken the class, you can exchange services. Do the math my sisters and brothers, having locks is cheaper than braids, weaves or perms (the creamy crap)!

Salon Chair and the ‘Kitchen Locktation’

It is amazing that the barber chair is generally bigger than a salon chair. A man’s hair cut is supposed to be completed in 15 minutes. Women spend hours in a beauty salon and their chairs are smaller. Buyers beware; whenever, you are shopping around for a Sisterlocks/Brotherlocks® consultant, ask what type of chair he/she has. I would recommend that based on the hours for your installation, the consultant’s chair should be a hydraulic and reclining. Your comfort is important for a pleasant Sisterlocks/Brotherlocks® experience.

The reason for four sets of Sisterlocks®

People are always asking, "Why did you get so many sets of Sisterlocks®"? It is a question that I really did not want to answer on line. Today, will mark as my day of completion with that question. Always remember that if someone likes your service they may tell two persons. If someone does not like your service, they will tell everyone that they know.

My first set of Sisterlocks® were done by a Certified Sisterlocks® Consultant
in Jamaica, NY. I received 279 Sisterlocks®. She left out 1.5 to 2 inches of my hair. Upon completion of my locking experience, my hair looked like an on kept afro. It was a sad way to lose $500.00. My parts were uneven and I was not a satisfied customer. I got that consultant name in January 2007 for the Sisterlocks® website.

My second set of locks were done by a trainee. My locks were beautiful and there were much smaller. In fact, I had 633 locks. I love those locks but the retightening was HELL. I was forced to shave off that set of locks on January 26, 2008. The more locks you have, the higher the maintenance in both money and time.

My third set of Sisterlocks® were done in Manhattan. I paid $600.00 for 1.5 inches of hair in June 2008. I wore those locks for one year. I received 314 locks for $600.00. Despite CRAZY GLUE was used, I still had problems with slippage. One morning I refused to go to work because my hair looked on kept. Those locks were larger and I did my own maintenance. In May 2009, I attended the Sisterlocks® refresher class in New Jersey. That was an opportunity of seeing many locked heads. My hair was the WORSE set of Sisterlocks®. One person suggested that if I'm going to do Sisterlocks® as a business, I deserved a better set of locks. It took three weeks and a $10.00 wig to remove those locks. Those locks were eventually removed and my fourth and final set of locks were installed in July, 2009 in Brooklyn, NY.

Before you make the commitment of having your locks installed, please do your research. Don't be like me because it was an expensive experiment in both time, stress and money. This hair locking experience has caused me to become a NYS Master Barber, NYS Natural Hair Stylist and a Certified Sisterlocks Consultant.

Who really is Patricia?

I was trained in Sisterlocks® in April 2007 and took the refresher class in May 2009. In order to submit my certification documentation, I offered free Sisterlocks/Brotherlocks® installations to the community. My Sisterlocks/Brotherlocks® certification package was submitted in May 2009. Four inches of hair was installed free. I have pictures of my work available upon request.

In September 2008, I started a barbering class at American Barber Institute (ABI). I was a flexible student there for six months. Upon completion of my class, I registered and took the New York State Master Barber Examination. Today, I’m proud to announce that I have passed the examination and was issued a NYS Master Barber License. Also, I have applied for a New York State Natural Hair Styling License.

Doing hair is an art and a labor of love. I have always loved doing hair and the satisfaction it gives to see the customer smiles as he/she leaves the work station. I returned to ABI in July 2009 for a refresher in barbering. There is a contagious energy in working in a shop/salon. People smile, laugh, share and educate each other. Having a returning customer is like finding a new candy. It is great satisfaction to have a customer request your services again and again. I needed so much energy to take the NYS examination and returning to the barber institute was my best decision yet. Sisters and brothers, please do not under estimate the ability of a student. There are students who were born with the skill of doing hair and simply need the institute to learn sterilization, shampoo, shaving, facial massage and proper methods of cutting. Cutting is an art and the scissors, clippers and combs should be held in a specific way. If the tool/comb falls on the ground, it must be washed in soapy water and placed in barbicide solution for at least 20 minutes.

My goal is to open a salon in the near future and I’m presently registered to attend an entrepreneur class starting in September 2009. That class will teach me the necessary skills to run a successful business in the hair industry. I have surrounded myself with people in the industry who can assist me with the technical aspect of the business.

When my unisex salon is open in Queens, New York, services in barbering and natural hair care will be offered.
